How can I support my child's education?

Tips from the American Library Association:
  1. Visit your school library. Is there a qualified librarian available to work with students? Are the books and resources up to date? Children cannot be educated to live and work in the 21st century using resources from the 1970s. Let your principal and school board know of your concerns.

Why Should You Care About Librarians and School Libraries?

FOR YOUR CHILD'S ACHIEVEMENT

Across the United States and many countries, research has shown that students in schools with good school libraries learn more, get better grades, and score higher on standardized test scores than their peers in schools without libraries. There is "clear evidence of this connection between student achievement and the presence of school libraries with qualified school library media specialists."

SCHOOL LIBRARIANS HAVE A CRUCIAL  ROLE IN TEACHING

Librarians are an important instructional partners or consultants to classroom teachers in supporting and expanding existing curriculum. They work with classroom teachers and support effective and exciting learning opportunities with books, technology and more.

On Monday, March 10th, we had our 3rd annual Read Across TKS / Sakura Medal Reading Celebration!  This marks the 3rd year of these reading incentive programs, and it has been our most successful year!!!  In Read Across TKS, our goal was to read 13,000 English books.  We passed our goal with 15,794 English books.  THAT IS AMAZING!  WELL DONE, TKS STUDENTS!  Awards were given to Star Readers, the Top Reader for Grades 1-3 and Grades 4-6, and our panda bear was given a name - welcome to our TKS family, Panny!
Our school had 448 votes for a favorite Sakura Medal book - OUTSTANDING!  This is the most votes that our school has had!  We can't wait to find out which books are awarded the Sakura Medal award in May.  Also, raffles for gift cards were drawn and the big iPad raffle winner was announced.  Congratulations to everyone who won a gift card, and to all the students who participated in the Sakura Medal program!
Keep reading, TKS!

Congratulations to all the students who read 100, 125, 150, 175 and 200 books!  These students read enough books to earn a ticket to the Read Across TKS Pizza and Movie Party!  It was a full house in the library with 90 students!  We ate pizza and watched the movie, "Turbo."  It was a lot of fun!  We also had some very special helpers: Mr. Kelly, Ms. McKernan, Mr. Last and his wife, Yui and their baby Rose, Mr. Bacon, Miss Stephens and 2 very special Library Moms.  We also had a special visit from Mr. Lee and Principal Chou.  Thank you for coming to our Movie Party and making it a fun day!  Well done, everyone!
